Disinformation – Important consultation for agencies involved in political advertising (incl. micro-targeting)

Given the negative impact of disinformation on democratic processes, such as elections or referenda, but also on the trust in governments or the freedom (and safety) of the press, the European Commission launched a public consultation to better understand how citizens are targeted by and how they perceive political ads, especially online.

What are the implications for agencies?
This is particularly relevant to agencies that are supporting candidates or parties in running their political campaigns or advertising. It is also relevant in the context of your brand safety activities.

Relevant questions in the public consultation pertain to micro-targeting (and a potential ban), the definition of disinformation (which could lead to legal uncertainty if badly phrased), the effectiveness of the Code of Practice on Disinformation and potential alternatives to it (co-regulation or regulation), and actions curbing the monetisation of disinformation content.
