EACA has been asked by the European Commission to provide data that demonstrates agencies’ efforts to curb Covid-19 disinformation. The same request went out to associations representing advertisers and ad tech companies, as well as to platforms.

Platforms have informally said to comply with the request. WFA (advertisers) have said to provide (available) data as soon as possible. EACA has been asked to “provide information on policies to limit advertising placements on third-party websites using disinformation around COVID-19 to attract advertising revenues”.

Such data should reflect trends in demonetising such publishers by using existing samples of disinformation websites that are established, e.g. by the Global Disinformation Index or Newsguard. Data should also be provided on “transparency measures adopted to enable advertisers to exclude websites exposing disinformation around COVID-19”.

What are the implications for agencies?
EACA or agencies are not legally obliged to deliver the data (neither as signatories of the Code of Practice on Disinformation, nor else).

However, in order demonstrate our commitment to the collaborative effort to counter (potentially harmful) disinformation to both policy-makers and advertisers, we would strongly recommend to provide whatever data or information about policies that help demonetise websites spreading disinformation or brand safety tools you provide to advertisers.
